About George Hanson

George Hanson (Building Contractors) Ltd has over 30 years experience in the industry - officially established in March 1990, the company has gone on to become one of Bute's most successful businesses and it's largest private sector employer, providing employment to over 40 local men, including bricklayers, joiners, roofers, plasterers, painters as well as their office staff.

George himself is a native of Bute, served his apprenticeship as a joiner for mainland based building contractors. He saw a large number of workers coming to Bute, whilst at the same time, a large number of building trade workers leaving the island to work on the mainland. His driving ambition was to buck the trend of using mainland firms coming to the island carrying out work which should have been done by local men. Setting up George Hanson Joiners in 1981, George then acquired the long established firm of Robert Paterson & Son in 1987 on the retirement of the owner, Bobby Paterson.

His aim of creating an all-in-one building company led to the formation of George Hanson (Building Contractors) Ltd in March 1990.

Upwards of 36 apprenticeships have been taken on over the past 30 years.
